About 1.30am emergency services were called to Belford following reports of a crash.
The rider, a 46-year-old man, died at the scene.
Police will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
A contraflow has been setup on the New England Highway while the RMS and crash investigation unit remain at the scene.
While traffic is moving in both directions, motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Light vehicles can use Bell Road and Standen Drive as an alternative route.
Westbound traffic was queued back to eight kilometres at 7am on Thursday.
