The upgrades will be carried out along a two kilometre section of the highway to improve safety and reduce the risk and severity of crashes.
Work includes widening the road shoulder, installing roadside safety barriers, providing widened medians, correcting road levels and improving the stability of a roadside embankment.
Work will be carried out from Monday April 29 between 6am and 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays and is expected to be complete by February 2020, weather permitting.
Motorists may experience delays and disruptions to traffic flow and travel times, with journeys expected to take up to an additional 10 minutes during some stages of work.
In addition to this upgrade at Whittingham, work recently started on new overtaking lanes at Ogilvies Hill and Winery Hill which will add up to an additional 15 minutes to journeys on the Golden Highway.
For the safety of motorists and workers, lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours. Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.
Starting on the same day will be survey work on the New England Highway at Whittingham.
Work will be carried out intermittently from Monday between 7.30am and 4.30pm and 7pm and 4am and is expected to take four weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Traffic control will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists and will include shoulder closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
