And this is no analogy.
When the Singleton Argus interviewed the teenager in February this year, ahead of the State Combined Events Championship in Dubbo, the talented Year 8 St Phillips Christian College student stood at 173cm tall.
He used this advantage to excel against the region's best high jumpers when securing the gold medal at the Hunter Track Classic (1.55m).
Less than a year down the track, he now stands over 180cm.
"There's no height in our family, our family is actually tiny," Lorenz told the Singleton Argus earlier this month.
"We have one tall uncle and that's about it."
The 14-year-old is currently moments away from competing at the Australian All Schools Championships in Perth at midday today (9am local time) off the back of a successful NSW CIS High School Athletics Championships.
There he collected a gold medal for long jump (5.7m), silver medals for triple jump (11.28), 100m hurdles (15.91), high jump (1.75m) and bronze medals for the javelin (33.5m) and 200m sprint (24.59).
He would also finish fifth in the 100m sprint with a time of 12.15 (the winner finished on 11.94).
As the carnival drew to a close Lorenz was crowned as the athlete of the meet.
"My coach Hilary (Kennedy) has helped a lot," he added.
"She tells me not to think of the competition and just focus on myself."
Lorenz has also credited his visit to the Little Athletics Australia national camp held at Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra recently for his added success.
"I was pretty excited to see what the elite athletes do over there and each day we'd do something different," he recalled.
"This year has been about how much work it takes to get to a good level, I didn't realise how much it took until this year."
When concluding this interview in early November the young athlete put forth the bold argument that he now has what it takes to clear the 1.75m mark on the high jump mat by the end of the year.
He then did one better.
Lorenz recorded a new Singleton Track and Field club under-15 record of 1.80m on Tuesday, November 19 at Alroy Reserve.
Can he now add to his achievements in Perth?
The local talent will take on the nation's best junior athletes at midday today.
