National Party members selected Clarance Town resident David Layzell as their candidate in the Upper Hunter by-election

Despite the support of Deputy Premier and Nationals leader John Barilaro Singleton's Mayor Sue Moore failed in her bid to become the party's candidate for the Upper Hunter by-election.

At a meeting held at the Singleton Diggers Club tonight National Party delegates chose 45-year-old construction manager David Layzell.

Mr Layzell lives in Clarence Town and has been a member of the Nationals since 2013.

Mr Barilaro attended the meeting tonight and was hoping to see Cr Moore pre-selected but admitted earlier that these thing don't always run to plan.

And obviously for him tonight they did not.
