The evening opened with an emotional ceremony, with Crystal McInerney sharing her and her late husband, Stephen’s story and battle with cancer.
Stephen was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in 2010, after suffering severe headaches and blurred vision. Unfortunately he passed away in 2015.
In honour of Stephen, Crystal not only spoke at the open ceremony but lit the 'remembrance candle' in his memory.
The opening ceremony featured other inspirational and emotional stories too, including Singleton’s Mitchell Cox who battled with brain cancer just a few years ago.
With his wonderful voice and love of music, Mitchell performed the national anthem as well as a selection of songs to kick start the evening’s atmosphere.
And by 5pm, Pirtek Park was filled with all kinds of super heroes and not just because of the events themed dress code.
Each and every participant at the Relay for Life event had a story to share, whether they were a cancer survivor, carer or simply knew someone who had been touched by the illness.
Together the Relay for Life collective lapped the oval in the midst of fun events such as the Miss Relay, the Box Car Derby and wonderful entertainment from the Blu’s School of Dance and singer ‘Tiny Dancer’.
Cancer Council Co-chair Simone Burrows said this year was a super event and there had been a lot of planning in preparation for the Relay.
“We are so grateful for the community and participant’s support and would like to thank all of our sponsors for this year,” Simone said.
The fun and moving overnight Relay raises vital funds for Cancer Council's research, prevention and support services in the hopes that one day we can wake up to a cancer free world.
The Singleton Relay for Life participants will continue to lap the Pirtek Park Oval until the early hours of tomorrow morning.
